Beginning high school can be exciting, yet a bit overwhelming for many freshmen. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, nearly 70% of high school students feel stressed in their first year. Freshman year is crucial as it sets the academic and social tone for the rest of high school. Learning to manage time, stay organized, and get involved can make a big difference. With the right mindset and advice, incoming freshmen can start their high school journey with confidence and avoid common challenges. Today, a couple seniors will share lessons learned from our experiences and suggest ways to help upcoming freshmen make the most of their first year.
As a senior now, I can see things I wish I had done differently as a freshman. One major lesson was the importance of participating in school activities and sports. Joining more clubs and teams earlier would have helped me discover my interests sooner and feel more connected to school. Getting involved helps you find your passions and builds lasting friendships and memories. Another key piece of advice is to keep your grades up from the start. Freshman year is important because it establishes your GPA, which colleges will later consider. Building good study habits early makes the rest of high school much easier.
I also talked to my friend Milka, who shared her perspective on freshman year. She found it hard to make new friends while missing her old ones. She said, “It feels like I’m replacing my old friends because I’m looking for them in others, knowing it won’t be the same.” High school can feel like a fresh start, but it’s natural to hold on to past friendships. Milka appreciates her new friends, who helped her realize that everyone is unique. As she wisely put it, “You can start a new beginning with new people while not forgetting where you started that chapter.”
Reflecting on both my experiences and Milka’s, freshman year is full of challenges but also growth opportunities. Getting involved, maintaining good grades, and being open to new friendships can make high school rewarding. While it may feel stressful, remembering that everyone else is figuring it out too. Stay positive. Freshman year is just the beginning, and the choices you make early on can shape your high school journey. With the right mindset, future freshmen can build a strong foundation for success.
